Middle and High School Engineering

Cover_Revised_112013_1Sew Electric is a book of hands-on projects designed to get middle and high school students excited about engineering. A series of fun DIY projects, including a glowing bookmark and an interactive stuffed monster, teaches students how to build electronics and write programs. It’s a perfect gift for the crafter, artist, or techie on your list. It’s also great for after school engineering programs, project-based science and technology classes, or creative family activities. The book engages students, especially young women, by blending engineering with art and craft, allowing people to take the same personal approach to electronics and coding that they do to the arts.

As Jocelyn Goldfein, the Director of Engineering at Facebook, put it:   “I wish I’d had this book when I was young…Bringing together craft and technology makes so much sense!”

Background

The book began as a joint research project between MIT professor Leah Buechley and the National Center for Women and Information Technology. All of the projects have been extensively tested with middle school and high school students. The projects are designed to teach the fundamentals of computer science and and electrical engineering while being fun and easy to build. The kits are manufactured by Sparkfun Electronics.
